Bathroom renovation in Blainville: steps, cost and permits.
Before you call a contractor: how a bathroom renovation unfolds, what moves the cost up or down, and what the City of Blainville publishes about permits.
A bathroom renovation follows a set order: quote and layout, a permit if one is needed, demolition, plumbing and electrical, tile, then the shower or tub, the vanity and the ventilation, and finally the finishing.
The cost does not depend on the size of the room alone. It moves mostly with what gets relocated, the materials you pick and what shows up when the walls are opened. PRO G2 does not publish prices: the quote is free, detailed and with no obligation.
On permits, the City of Blainville lists the "interior fit-out of a room or premises" among the renovations that require one, but its page does not name bathrooms. The details and the source are further down.
A bathroom redone, in order.
The details change from one project to the next, but the sequence is usually this one. How long each step takes depends on the size of the job, a refresh or a complete redo, and on material lead times.
- 01Visit and quote. We pin down what you want to change, then come back with a detailed quote, free and with no obligation.
- 02Layout and materials. The layout is rethought where needed and the materials are chosen with you: shower, tub, tile, vanity, ventilation.
- 03Permit, if required. Before starting, we check with you whether a permit is needed. In Blainville, no work can begin before the permit is issued (see the permit section below).
- 04Demolition, plumbing and electrical. If the plumbing or the electrical has to move, we coordinate the plumber and the electrician for you.
- 05Tile and fixtures. Tile goes in first, then the shower or tub, the vanity and the ventilation.
- 06Finishing and final inspection. We complete the details, then do the final inspection with you.
What makes the cost vary from one bathroom to the next.
Two bathrooms of the same size can lead to very different quotes. Rather than an average, here is where the gaps come from.
- ·What gets moved. Keeping the shower and sink where they are is not the same plumbing and electrical job as relocating water lines, drains or outlets.
- ·Shower, tub or both. The fixtures you choose, and the tile around them, weigh on the quote.
- ·Materials. Tile, vanity, faucets: the gap between a standard product and a high-end one shows up directly in the total.
- ·The condition of walls and floor. What turns up once things are opened can add work. That is why a line-by-line quote is more useful than a single lump sum.
- ·Ventilation. It is part of a room redone from scratch, not of a simple refresh.
- ·Standalone or bundled. Redoing the bathroom alone, or as part of a major renovation, may be priced differently.
- ·The permit and the wait. The City's permit fee is calculated on the estimated cost of the work (see below), and issuing a permit can take time.
To compare quotes, Quebec's building board (the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, or RBQ) suggests asking at least three contractors and comparing, among other things, how clear and detailed each quote is, the materials used, how precise the schedule is, and the price and payment terms. Its full advice is on the RBQ page Choisir un entrepreneur pour vos rénovations (in French).
Permits: what the City of Blainville says.
This is what the City publishes in the Règlements et permis section of its website, which is in French (page read on November 3, 2026). The translations are ours. Rules and fees can change, so always confirm with the City.
"A permit is required for the construction, modification or extension of a main residential building."
Among its examples of modification (renovation) work that requires a building permit, the City lists the "interior fit-out of a room or premises", a change of exterior cladding, new doors and windows and a new roof. The page does not name bathrooms: the City's planning department is the one to confirm whether your work needs a permit.
Fee listed for a residential modification (renovation): "$10 for every $1,000 of the estimated cost of the work, with a minimum of $50".
The application is made "online or in person at city hall". The City lists the application form, a detailed site plan prepared by a land surveyor and architectural plans, but states that the required documents "may vary depending on the project". It also warns that "a delay should be expected in processing some permit applications" and that "no work may begin before it is obtained". The permit could also fall under the PIIA, the City's site planning and architectural integration review.
To find out whether your bathroom needs one, contact the City's planning department (Service de l'urbanisme, de la mobilité et de la transition écologique) at 450 434-5200 or urbanisme@blainville.ca. At PRO G2, we check this with you before we start.
